Success Story:On the Verge of Insulin to Shaping Up

*In a CMWL multicenter randomized trial involving 550 patients who followed a CMWL Low-Calorie Diet (LCD) or Modified LCD Program, both with and without appetite suppressants, the average weight loss was 2 pounds per week over a 12-week period. The research was wholly funded by an independent third party with the exception of travel expenses. According to a study published in The American Journal of Medicine, participants completing a 12-week medical weight loss program lost 11.1% of their body weight, on average. Results may vary.

Given the choice between going on insulin or changing my lifestyle, I chose the latter. I just couldn’t stand the thought of needles, and to get my weight under control, I knew I needed to find something that worked. That’s what brought me to The Center for Medical Weight Loss. 

When I found out I was on the verge of going on insulin, my whole perspective changed. It woke me up to my poor habits and gave me that not-so-gentle nudge I needed to start making some positive changes. But where, and how? I had previously tried dieting on my own, but it was difficult not having a clear plan to follow. My doctor, Dr. Hyman, suggested I follow the CMWL program, which is medically-directed under his care. Dr. Hyman had been my physician for years, and I trusted his guidance and had confidence that I would be able to get my weight under control if I set my mind to it. I was on board. 

The first few weeks were challenging. People were skeptical of my new weight loss strategy, joking that I wouldn’t be able to keep it up. But the results I saw week after week proved the skeptics wrong. 

CMWL made losing weight easy. The counseling sessions with Dr. Hyman were very supportive and encouraging. It was a long journey, but it was convenient having meals already prepared. I never doubted myself or the program. When Dr. Hyman took me off some of my medications, I was all the more motivated to continue to lose. 

Ultimately, my family’s support pushed me through this journey. My daughter, Aimee, would prepare meals for herself and my husband to last a few days, and they would clean up quickly so I would not be tempted while I was following the plan Dr. Hyman had created for me.. 

Initially, it was challenging overcoming the aromas of food—particularly in the food court, at the mall, which is where I take classes every Saturday. Over time, I trained my mind to ignore it. I work on my laptop while my husband eats his lunch, and I have my CMWL protein shake, water, and maybe a hot cup of tea. I’ve learned to be content doing my own thing and ignore outside temptations. 

The improvement in my health is noticeable, and it feels great! Walking a minimum one mile a day, rain or shine, has become habit. I downloaded a free app to track my distance, and sometimes my daughter even walks with me. It’s become a way for us to spend quality time together—she even pushes me to pick up the pace!

Now, I can look in the mirror and just say “wow” when I see what I have accomplished. Shopping for clothes was never fun because nothing ever looked right, but now I love it! I no longer need to shop in the plus-size section, and it feels great finding clothes that fit in all departments. Each week it seems like I need to go shopping for smaller clothes, and co-workers are noticing and commenting. 

I know maintaining weight loss takes just as much work as losing it, and I have to continuously be mindful to never go back to my poor eating habits because I never want to be on the verge of going on insulin again. I’m ready for the challenge!
