The battle with my weight started as a young teen. I struggled with numerous eating disorders, and when I was 20 years old I entered a rehabilitation facility. While in rehab, through many intense therapy sessions, I was able to learn where my weight struggles stemmed from and began the healing and growing process from the inside out. I learned how to be a happy, healthy me on the inside. Shortly after, I decided it was time to work on the outside in a happy, healthy way.
My motivation to change came from within. I spent so much time focusing on things I didn’t have control over, so I decided to put that energy into something I could control. I woke up one day determined to lose weight. I started by making small changes like getting back in the gym. About three months later I found The Center for Medical Weight Loss.
I did extensive research before coming to CMWL. I had already tried Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, a nutritionist, and calorie counters without much success. It was crucial for me to find a program that best fit my needs. I needed a program that could provide one-on-one counseling with a focus on behavioral modification.
I set up a meeting with Dr. Schermerhorn in January 2012 to learn more about the program. As soon as I walked out of his office, I knew it was just right for me. I found a mentor I could connect with, which was crucial for my success.
I successfully completed the 800-calorie Quick Start phase of the program. The eating guidelines, informational nutrition worksheets, and in-depth weigh-ins, which include your BMI and fat percentage, kept me on track. Most importantly, the guidance and counseling at every visit helped me make some serious lifestyle changes.
It was a difficult transition, but I put everything I had into it. Being someone who battles an eating disorder, I had quite a few challenges along the way. I battled cravings, pressure of people offering me food, and my own thoughts, which are the most intense and exhausting part of weight loss. When the days got hard, I turned to my support system, which included friends, family, and the professional help of Dr. Schermerhorn and my therapist. I learned that it’s all about mind over matter. Instead of turning to food, I used healthy coping skills like reading, exercise, journaling, and just talking through my issues. I took it one day at a time and constantly reminded myself that I was in control the outcome.
One year later I am 80 pounds lighter and in the maintenance phase of the program. I feel like myself again, and I have the confidence to take on any challenge. I embrace life and have a completely different outlook. Now, I have a new set of challenges, but I stay focused by taking it one day at a time.
